- January 19: Apple Computer releases the Macintosh SE/30, the first compact Mac to use the Motorola 68030 processor.

- September 20: The Macintosh IIci and the Macintosh Portable (Apple's first portable computer) are released. Also released to support them is System 6.0.4. Public Folder is released by Claris as an early Macintosh file sharing utility for System 6. Apple Computer and Microsoft announce a joint effort to develop an alternative to PostScript, which would lead to TrueType.
