- January 9: The Titanium PowerBook G4 is introduced at the 2001 Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. iTunes is also released as part of Apple's "Digital Hub" strategy. The update to Mac OS 9.1 is released.
- January 20: 43rd U.S. president George W. Bush is inaugurated.
- February 21: At the Macworld Expo in Tokyo, Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs presents improved Japanese font support in Mac OS X, along with new color variants of the iMac G3, including "Flower Power" and "Blue Dalmation".
- March 24: Mac OS X is commercially released, superseding classic Mac OS. Based on NeXT's operating system, NeXTSTEP, it is first released to the public as Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah).
- April 11: SoundJam MP 2.5.3 is the last version to be released for classic Mac OS as Apple Computer had acquired the rights to develop it into iTunes.
- April 14: Mac OS X 10.0.1 (Cheetah) is released.
- May 1: Apple introduces the updated iBook G3, also referred to as the "IceBook", along with iTunes 1.1.1, and Mac OS X 10.0.2 (Cheetah).
- May 19: Apple Tysons Corner in Virginia and Apple Glendale Galleria in California are the first official Apple retail stores to be opened.
- May 21-25: The 2001 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2001) is held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in California.
- June 18: Mac OS 9.2 is released.
- June 21: Mac OS X 10.0.4 (Cheetah) is released.
- July 9: Apple Computer acquires Spruce Technologies, a DVD authoring company.
- August 3: Apple Willow Bend in Plano, Texas is the third Apple retail store to be opened.
- August 11: Apple Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota is the fourth Apple retail store to be opened.
- August 21: Mac OS 9.2.1 is released.
- August 23: Apple Woodfield in Schaumburg, Illinois is the fifth Apple retail store to be opened.
- September 1: Apple Northshore in Lynnfield, Massachusetts is the sixth Apple retail store to be opened.
- September 7: Apple Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio is the seventh Apple retail store to be opened.
- September 18: Apple International Plaza in Tampa, Florida is the eighth Apple retail store to be opened.
- October 10: Apple Palo Alto in Palo Alto, California is the ninth Apple retail store to be opened.
- October 13: The Apple Crossgates and Apple Saddle Creek retail stores are opened in New York and Tennessee, respectively.
- October 23: The first iPod is announced and iTunes 2 is released.
- November 10: The first iPod becomes available for sale.
- December 5: Mac OS 9.2.2 is released.
