- January 5-9: Macworld Expo is held in San Francisco, with Apple participating there for the last time. CEO Steve Jobs releases an open letter dismissing speculation about his health.
- January 6: At the keynote event of the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Phil Schiller introduces iLife '09, iWork '09, and the 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro
- January 14: Apple CEO Steve Jobs takes a six-month leave of absence until the end of June to focus on his health.
- January 20: 44th U.S. president Barack Obama is inaugurated.
- January 26: RPN Calculator 1.0 is released for iPhone OS 2.2.
- January 27: iPhone OS 2.2.1 is released as the final update to iPhone OS 2. QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5.3 is the final version to be released for Mac OS X.
February 2009[]
- February 7: Original Macintosh development team member Laszlo Zsidek passes away.
- February 19: The 20-inch aluminum Apple Cinema Display is discontinued.
- February 27: Cooking Mama and Space Invaders are released for iPhone OS.

- March 3: The 2nd-generation Time Capsule is released. The ATI Radeon HD 4870 is released for the 2009 1st-generation Mac Pro.
- March 11: The 3rd-generation iPod shuffle is released. The iPod Remote and the 2 GB version of the 2nd-generation iPod shuffle are discontinued.

- April 20: Oracle Corporation announces that it will acquire Sun Microsystems.
- April 22: Mactracker is launched for iPhone OS.

- May 1: Cooking Mama Lite, the free version of the Cooking Mama app for iPhone OS, is released.
- May 12: Mac OS X 10.5.7 (Leopard) is released.
June 2009[]
- June 8-12: The 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference is held at Moscone West. During the keynote event on the first day, announcements include Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard", iPhone OS 3, and the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3G is repriced to $99 with contract. The 13-inch unibody MacBook Pro is released.
- June 12: All remaining analog television broadcasts are retired in the United States as TV stations switch to HDTV digital standards.
- June 14: XiphQT 0.1.9 is the final version to be released for Mac OS X due to the deprecation of QuickTime 7.
- June 17: iPhone OS 3 is released.
- June 19: The iPhone 3GS is released in the United States, Canada, and six European countries.
- June 24: Apple TV Software 2.4 is released.
- June 26: The iPhone 3GS is released in Australia and Japan.
July 2009[]
- July 18: G-Force: The Game is released for iPhone OS through the Apple App Store.

- September 9: The 3rd-generation iPod touch is released along with the 5th-generation iPod nano and a thinner 160 GB 6th-generation iPod classic. The 3rd-generation iPod shuffle is also refreshed in three new colors. The 1 GB version of the 2nd-generation iPod shuffle, the 16 and 32 GB versions of the 2nd-generation iPod touch, the iPod Radio Remote, and the Nike + iPod Sport Kit are discontinued.
- September 14: The 40 GB version of the 1st-generation Apple TV is discontinued.
- September 26: Apple Oakridge Centre in Vancouver, Canada is the 270th Apple retail store to be opened.
October 2009[]
- October 5: Twitter is released for iPhone OS.
- October 20: Apple releases iMacs with unibody aluminum construction and Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series GPUs. The Magic Mouse is also released, replacing the wireless Mighty Mouse.
- October 22: Microsoft releases Windows 7 for PCs.
November 2009[]
- November 5: Intaglio SketchPad 1.0 is released for iPhone OS.
- November 7: Apple Carrousel du Louvre is the first Apple retail store to be opened in France. Apple TV Software 3.0.1 is released.
- November 9: Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) is released.

- December 11: Angry Birds is released for iPhone OS through the iTunes Store.
- December 15: James Cameron's Avatar is released for iOS through the Apple App Store.
