4-bit refers to four binary (0 or 1) units of integer data. This allows for up to 16 combinations of values, typically from 0 to 15.

  • 4-bit color allows for up to 16 grays, or 16 colors assigned by a color lookup table (CLUT). This is also referred to as the EGA standard by PC users.
  • 4-bit sound allows for a range of up to 16 values (−8 to +7) per sample (Hertz).
