Apple II Trek, originally released as Startrek and sometimes referred to as Apple Trek, is a sci-fi strategy game that was written for the Apple II by Wendell Sander and released by Apple Computer.[1] It is based on a text-based game originally created in 1971.
History[]
In 1976, Sander acquired and modified an Apple-1 computer, with which he wrote a Star Trek game that impressed Apple Computer Company co-founder Steve Jobs. By June 18, 1977, he had adapted it to run on the Apple II. Sander was hired in August 1977 as the newly-incorporated Apple Computer's 16th employee.[2][3]
The game was released by Apple on cassette as Startrek in January 1978, with Starwars on the reverse side. To avoid legal issues, it was renamed Apple II Trek and some proper names in the game were modified for a January 1979 re-release. However, the game's source code was otherwise unchanged.[1][4][5]
