Apple Intelligence is an artificial intelligence (AI) platform developed by Apple to provide AI features that are processed online and on-device. It was announced on June 10 at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference.[1]
Release[]
A preview version of Apple Intelligence was released to developers with beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 (Sequoia), released on July 29, 2024.[2] These became available to the public on the following October 28th.[3] Other features, such as Genmoji and Image Playground are expected to come later.[4]
Development history[]
Apple senior VP of software engineering Craig Federighi was motivated to swiftly pursue AI development after testing GitHub Copilot during his Christmas break in late 2023.[5] The platform was developed in partnership with OpenAI and features system-wide integration of ChatGPT with Siri.[6] The project expanded quickly in February 2024 with staff reassigned from the doomed Apple electric car project.[7]
