The 1997 Macworld Conference & Expo was held January 7 to 10, 1997 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. The return of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs overshadowed CEO Gil Amelio at an opening day media event held nearby at the Marriott Hotel.[1]

The 1997 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 1997) was held May 12 to 16, 1997 at the San Jose Convention Center. This was the first event after Apple had completed its acquisition of NeXT. Steve Jobs held a closing "fireside chat" on May 13 as a consultant and focused on the efforts to use OpenStep as the foundation of the next Mac OS under the codename "Rhapsody".[2][3]
August 1997[]
On August 6, 1997, a keynote event was held at Macworld Expo Boston in which Steve Jobs introduced the new Apple Board of Directors and announced a deal with Microsoft in which the two companies agreed to cross-license technology in exchange for Microsoft's commitment to continue developing software such as Microsoft Office for the Mac and an investment of $150 million in Apple non-voting stock. In return, Apple also agreed to include the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser by default with future Mac OS releases for the next 5 years. Though the joint announcement and Bill Gates' appearance on live video were met with shock, the investment from Microsoft helped save Apple from bankruptcy.[4][5]
November 1997[]
On November 10, 1997, Apple hosted a media event in which acting CEO Steve Jobs introduced the PowerPC G3 processor, used in the Power Macintosh G3 and PowerBook G3. He also announced the launch of the Apple online store.
