Arthur Levinson - 2012 National Medal of Technology & Innovation

Dr. Arthur D. "Art" Levinson (born March 31, 1950) is a businessman who is the CEO of Calico Labs and the Chairman of the Apple Board of Directors since 2011.[1]

Education[]

Levinson graduated as a dual major with a B.S. in molecular biology and a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Washington in 1972. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Princeton University in 1977.[2][3]

Career[]

Levinson joined Genentech in 1980 as a senior scientist and became the director of cell genetics by 1987. In 1989, he was appointed VP of research technology, and then senior VP of research and development in 1993. In 1995, Levinson became president and CEO of Genentech and then chairman in 1999.[3]

Apple[]

Levinson was appointed to the board of Apple Computer on August 15, 2000.[2] He became the chairman of Apple Inc. on November 15, 2011, following the death of Steve Jobs on October 5.[1]
