The Austin is the capital city of the state of Texas, known for being the center of the technology within the state. Apple maintains a large presence within Austin, where it is building a new campus.

Statistics

With an estimated population of 978,908 as of 2019, Austin is the 4th most populous city in the state of Texas and the 11th most populous city in the United States.[1] As of 2020, there are 2 Apple retail stores within the Austin city limits.[2]

History

In 1992, Apple Computer first arrived in Austin with an office lease at Promontory Point in the northeast area of Austin, along with a purchase of land at Robinson Ranch on which to build a satellite campus. However, due to financial difficulties in the ensuing years, it sold the parcel to Motorola, which built their own campus on the site.[3]

After the return of Steve Jobs to Apple in 1997, the company acquired the assets of Power Computing, a Macintosh clone manufacturer based in Austin.[4] In 2010, it purchased Intrinsity, chip design firm also based in Austin.[5] In November 2019, Apple broke ground on a new campus to house its staff in Austin, where it manufactures the 3rd generation Mac Pro.[6]
