History

In 1992, Apple Computer first arrived in Austin with an office lease at Promontory Point in the northeast area of Austin, along with a purchase of land from the Robinson family on which to build a satellite campus. However, due to financial difficulties in the ensuing years, it sold the parcel to Motorola, which built their own campus on the site.[3]

After the return of Steve Jobs to Apple in 1997, the company acquired the assets of Power Computing, a Macintosh clone manufacturer based in Austin.[4] In 2010, it purchased Intrinsity, chip design firm also based in Austin.[5] The Instrinsity acqusition led to Apple hiring around 500 additional staff who were moved to Capital Ridge office building in southwest Austin. By 2015, Apple had acquired buildings at the Palmer Riata business park and began construction of an expanded campus which now houses the Apple Americas Operations Center.[3][6] In November 2019, Apple broke ground on a second campus to house more staff in Austin, where it manufactures the 3rd generation Mac Pro.[7]
