CarPlay, formerly iOS in the Car, is a set of features introduced in iOS 7.1 that allows users to interact with their iPhone 5 or later Apple device through the display interface of supported car models. It allows users to make calls, send and receive text messages, get directions and listen to music.[1]

The features were originally announced on June 10 at the 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference as iOS in the Car. It allows hands-free access to Maps, Messages, and other services through Siri.[2] It was rebranded as CarPlay on March 3, 2014 and released on the following March 10th.[3] Apple announced at the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference that it was planning to launch the next generation of CarPlay, with deeper integration with automobile hardware, sometime in late 2023.[4]

Electric automobile manufacturer Tesla Inc. has refused to support CarPlay, causing the Tesla Android Project to be initiated in 2022 as a 3rd-party open source workaround to allow access.[5]
