Apple - Designed by Apple in California

Designed by Apple in California is a hardbound pictorial book that was published on November 16, 2016 by Apple Inc.

Description[]

The coffee table book is dedicated to the memory of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and chronicles 20 years of the design of Apple products during the tenure of former Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive, who wrote the book's introduction. The coverage of the 450 photographs by Andrew Zuckerman begins with with iMac G3 from 1998 and concludes with the first Apple Pencil from 2015. It was available in two sizes, a "small" 10.2 x 12.75 in. version for US$199 and a "large" 13.0 x 16.25 in. version for US$299. Each book also included a pamphlet documenting the book's photographs, which are devoid of captions. The books were not translated for foreign markets, but the pamphlets were. The books were sold exclusively through online and retail Apple Stores and displayed at the latter.[1][2][3]

History[]

Prior to the publication of the book, "Designed by Apple in California" was a phrase found in inserts for Apple products developed after the return of Steve Jobs to Apple Computer. In June 2013, Apple began an ad campaign to promote the phrase, which was featured at the 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference.[4]

The book was announced by Apple on November 15, 2016 and went on sale on the following day.[1] The large version of the book was sold out by around June 2019 and the remaining inventory was withdrawn from sale by the following August.[5] After going out of print, specimens became listed for sale with asking prices of over US$30,000, a more than 100-fold increase over the original cover price.[3]
