The Displays pane from System Preferences in macOS allows a user to customize the resolution and brightess display settings of their Mac. The desktop background can be modified in the Desktop & Screen Saver pane.
History[]
The functionality was introduced in the Mac OS X Public Beta as the Monitors pane, succeeding the Monitors control panel from classic Mac OS.[1] The pane was renamed "Displays" with the public release of Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah). It also incorporated the features of ColorSync into the "Colors" tab with the release of Mac OS X 10.3 (Jaguar). With the introduction of Retina displays, the option to change the resolution was replaced by options to resize the user interface.[2]
