Dolby Laboratories, Inc., or simply Dolby Labs or Dolby, is a San Francisco-based company that specializes in audio encoding and noise reduction. Its technology is licensed to consumer electronics and software companies.

History[]

Dolby Laboratories was founded by Ray Dolby in 1964.[1]

End of support by Adobe[]

On September 15, 2017, Adobe Systems ended their licensing for software libraries from Dolby Labs.[2][3] Starting in October 2017, applications from Adobe Creative Cloud no longer provided support for encoding Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus sound formats, relying on the Windows or macOS operating systems for the decoding of Dolby audio.[4] In May 2019, Adobe notified its users that they were no longer authorized to use its older software containing Dolby codecs.[5]

Support by Apple products[]

In 2021, Apple introduced spatial audio, which is encoded in Dolby Atmos for supported headphones and playback devices.[6]
