EarPods are wired earbuds designed, marketed, produced and distributed by Apple.

Product history[]

The EarPods were announced with the iPhone 5 on September 12, 2012 and began shipping on September 21st. The remote with volume controls was designed by longtime Apple Engineer Wendell Sander.[1] In 2013, a one of a kind solid gold version was produced by chief design officer Jonathan Ive with Marc Newson and auctioned for $461,000 on behalf of the (PRODUCT)RED charity.[2]

The 5th to 7th-generation iPod touches included EarPods that lacked a mic and controls.

From September 2012 to May 2022, the 5th-generation and later iPod touch models, as well as the 7th-generation iPod nano from September 2012 to July 2017, were shipped with EarPods that lacked a microphone and remote controls.[3]

EarPods with a Lightning connector were introduced in September 2016 with the iPhone 7, the first model to lack a 3.5 mm jack. The external design of the EarPods formed the basis of the first wireless AirPods, which were also introduced during that special event.[4]
