Edward Thomas "Ed" Mackowiak (January 15, 1991April 27, 2016) was a software engineer at Apple Inc.


Mackowiak graduated in 2009 from Cazenovia High School at Cazenovia, New York, where he was a member of the Science Olympiad team and a trumpet player in the band.[1] Mackowiak received his BS in computer engineering in 2013 from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was on the Dean's List several times.[2] While at Rochester, Mackowiak was part of a group project to develop a touch-sensitive piano keyboard so that the player could simultaneously control audio effects while playing notes.[3]


Mackowiak created a project called Meeter Easy Meeting Scheduling App with C++ and Ruby on Rails, in which he was proficient.[4]

Mackowiak worked for Apple in Cupertino, California.[1] On April 27, 2016 at around 8:30am, Mackowiak was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a conference room at the 1 Infinite Loop campus. An investigation by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office determined that "no foul play and no other individuals were involved".[5][6]
