Emergency SOS is a feature of iOS and watchOS developed by Apple to allow users to contact an emergency number (such as 911 in North America, 000 in Australia, or 999 or 112 in other regions).[1]
History[]
The feature was first introduced as part of watchOS 3 on September 13, 2016, followed by the iOS 10.2 update on December 12, 2016.[2][3]
In September 2022, the feature was enhanced with Emergency SOS via satellite, introduced in the iPhone 14 series for areas where ground-based wireless services may not be available.[4] Crash Detection, which was also introduced in the iPhone 14 series along with the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and 2nd-generation Apple Watch SE, will automatically call emergency services in the event a severe crash is detected by a supported device.[5]
