The Rescue - Emergency SOS via satellite - iPhone 14 - Apple
Emergency SOS via satellite is a feature of iOS developed by Apple to allow supported devices to contact emergency services through a communications satellite in areas where ground-based wireless services may not be available.[1]
History[]
The feature was announced on September 7, 2022 with the iPhone 14 series, including the iPhone 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. 2 years of emergency satellite service are included free with the purchase of new iPhone 14 models.[1][2] The system went online on November 15, 2022 and iOS 16.1 or later is required.[3][4]
The satellite connectivity in the iPhone 14 series is provided by a Qualcomm X65 modem chip with other custom hardware to communicate with Globalstar satellites over band n53, part of the 5G "New Radio" (NR) specification. Apple agreed to cover 95% of Globalstar's capital expenditures on new satellites in exchange for 85% of their bandwidth. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has also been negotiations with Apple, though Starlink satellites from SpaceX are not yet supported.[5][6]
