The European Union 🇪🇺 (EU) is a supranational political, economic and monetary union of currently 27 member states located in Europe.

Statistics[]

The EU has a total area of 4,233,255.3 sq km (1,634,469.0 sq mi) and an estimated total population of about 447 million. Containing 5.8 per cent of the world population in 2020, the EU generated a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of around US$17.1 trillion in 2021, constituting approximately 18 percent of the global nominal GDP.[1]

Apple and the EU[]

In June 2022, the European Commission stated that it would enforce a single USB-C charging port standard across devices by the end of 2024. Legislation from the EU covers mobile devices, such as cameras, laptops, smartphones and tablets.[2][3] Apple previously opposed such plans, arguing that switching to a single charging port would stifle innovation.[4] In October 2022, Apple senior VP Greg Joswiak stated that the company respects the EU decision and would comply. At the time, Apple's iPad and Mac product lines had already migrated to USB-C, leaving the iPhone and AirPods among the product lines that were still introducing models with Lightning ports.[5][6]
