This folder bears striking similarity with its Windows counterpart. Introduced in Mac OS 8.5, it lies loose on the root level of the System Folder and remained there through Mac OS 9.
It stores the icons of files, folders and disks the user frequently uses. Once an item has been designated a favorite, it appars in the following locations (in addition to the Favorites folder itself):
- Favorites command of the Apple menu (as a submenu)
- Network Browser
- Navigation Services Open and Save dialogue boxes
The Finder has a menu command for designating an item as a favorite.
Under Mac OS X the concept lived on through Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar". As of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther", the Sidebar has increasingly taken its place.
