A folder is a graphical representation of a file directory within a computer file system.
History[]
The visual metaphor of a file folder was used in the graphical user interface of the Xerox Alto, which was studied by engineers from Apple Computer during a visit to Xerox's PARC facility. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs supported the adoption of the user interface elements in the Apple Lisa and Mac OS.
