The City of Fremont is located about 16 miles (26 km) north of the Cupertino headquarters of Apple Inc. in California.

With a population of 230,504 as of 2020, Fremont is the 16th most populous city in the state of California and the 96th most populous city in the United States.[1]>[2]

History[]

The earliest settlement in the area began at Mission San José, built by Spaniards in 1797. The City of Fremont was incorporated on January 23, 1956 and is named after American explorer and military officer John C. Frémont.[3]

Technology industry[]

In January 1984, Apple Computer opened an automated manufacturing facility in Fremont to build Macintosh computers.[4] In 1990, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had NeXT built another automated facility in Fremont.[5]
