The General pane in macOS 10.15

The General pane of System Preferences in macOS allows a user to customize their Mac by adjusting their general user interface settings.

History[]

System Preferences 10

The Appearance pane in Mac OS X 10.6

With the release of Mac OS X, the General preference pane superseded the General Controls control panel from classic Mac OS.[1] From Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.6.8, it was renamed to the Appearance pane.[2]

As of OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" in 2014, an option of a dark menu bar and Dock was introduced.[3]

As of macOS 10.14 "Mojave" in 2018, the user can select a full Light or Dark Mode, and select accent color, highlight color, sidebar icon size, scroll bar behavior, and window closing behavior. Users can also specify the default web browser, font smoothing, and the number of recent items displayed in menus.[2][4]
