Get Info is a menu command in the Finder. When chosen from the File menu, a new window appears, with information on the selected item.

Get Info has been a true gem on the Mac OS. It is a direct descendant from the System 1 original, and although was cripepd or altered somewhat with Mac OS X 10.0 and Mac OS X 10.1 (as the Inspector floating palette), it resumed its original shape and form as the Get Info window, beginning with Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar".

Get Info (prior to System 7)[]

Get Info (System 7)[]

When Get Info is summoned on a Macintosh running System 7 or later (up until Mac OS 8.5), the Get Info window shows up with the following information:

  • Icon of the item
  • Name of the item
  • Version number, if an application programme
  • Kind, such as alias
  • Size (in kilobytes and bytes)
  • Location of the item on the volume
  • Dates of creation and latest modification
  • Location of the original (if an alias)
  • Comments
  • Status: Locked, Template

Get Info (Mac OS 8.5)[]
