iOS 17 is the seventeenth major release of the iOS mobile operating system, developed by Apple to succeed iOS 16. It was announced on June 5 at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference and was released on September 18, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.[1]

New features[]

Senior VP Craig Federighi and staff introduced the following new features at WWDC 2023:[2]

  • Phone — updated with the ability to create and customize new contact posters for your contacts, and live voicemails showing a transcript of them.
  • FaceTime — new ability to leave a video message.
  • Messages — new search filters to get more accurate results on searches.
    • Catch-Up arrow to go to the first missed message.
    • Swipe to reply to messages quickly.
    • Transcribed Audio Messages.
    • Location Sharing, to show your contact's location.
    • Check In, as a way to show if you have arrived to a location on schedule.
    • Plus Button to store all message apps.
  • Stickers - for all apps, and includes Emojis.
  • AirDrop — new ability called "NameDrop" to swap contact information, airdrop, and even use SharePlay.
  • Dictation - updated language model for Autocorrect, and new speech model for Dictation.
  • Journal - new app to write about experiences, using information found on your device.
  • StandBy - shows customizable information if charged in Landscape mode.
  • Siri - option to just say "Siri".
  • Maps - new ability to download a map for use while offline.
  • Photos - new ability to recognize and create albums for pets.

Some new accessibility features that Apple previewed as part of Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 16, 2023 include:[3][4]

  • Assistive Access, for users with cognitive disabilities.
  • Detection Mode in Magnifier with Point and Speak, for users with vision disabilities.
  • Live Speech and Personal Voice Advance Speech Accessibility

Supported devices[]

iOS 17 requires an A12 Bionic processor or later, which means that support is dropped for the the iPhone 8/8 Plus, as well as the iPhone X. Certain devices with an A12 or A13 chip, including the iPhone XR, iPhone XS/XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max, and the iPhone SE (2nd generation), all have limited support. The following devices below are supported with iOS 17.[5]

Preliminary reports[]

A major new feature speculated for iOS 17 is support for 3rd-party app stores, to comply with the new Digital Markets Act in the European Union.[6] Dynamic Island features are also reported to be expanded as it is expected to be included with all iPhone 15 models.[7]
