iPadOS 14 is the first major update to iPadOS designed, developed and distributed by Apple, announced at WWDC 2020 on June 22, 2020,[1] alongside iOS 14, watchOS 7 and macOS Big Sur. It was released on September 16, 2020.[2]

New features[]

  • Calls no longer take over the entire screen.
  • Siri is now a small bubble at the lower right corner of your screen.
    • Both call UI and Siri changed to have a compact interface.
  • Siri now has 30% more facts than Siri in iOS 11.
  • New streamlined app design with sidebars and pull-down menus.
  • A revised Photos app with a new sidebar and drop-down menus.
  • The new Maps app lets you find cycling directions and charging pit stops, as well as handy guides that give you basic information about your destination.
  • The new Safari now has a privacy report.
  • The new App Store shows app privacy information.
  • In Messages, you can pin contacts to the top of the contacts menu, have group photos and group conversations, as well as inline replies to an existing message.
  • Multiple-sized widgets in Today View.
  • The new Smart Stack lets you group widgets together, with a feature that switches them automatically.
  • HomeKit automation in Control Center.
  • A feature called Scribble incorporates machine learning to convert written text to typed text, including foreign languages.[3]

There were 8 beta releases of iPadOS 14 following its announcement:

  • The developer beta was first released on the opening day of WWDC 2020 in June 2020 and was included as part of annual membership with the Apple Developer program for $99.[3]
  • The public beta was first released to the general public on July 10, 2020 and is free for anyone to install on a supported Apple device.[15]
  • Beta 3 was released on July 22, 2020.[16]
  • Beta 4 was released on August 4, 2020.[17]
  • Beta 5 was released on August 18, 2020.
  • Beta 6 was released on August 25, 2020.
  • Beta 7 was released on September 3, 2020.
  • Beta 8 was released on September 9, 2020.
  • The golden master was released to developers on September 15, 2020, the day before it was released to the public.[18]
