The 2nd-generation iPhone SE (Special Edition), sometimes referred as the iPhone SE 2020 or iPhone SE 2, is an entry-level smartphone designed by Apple Inc. The smartphone was announced on April 15, 2020 through a press release, the only iPhone model to date to be announced in such a manner, and became available to the public on the following April 24th. It was discontinued on March 8, 2022 with the introduction of the faster 3rd-generation iPhone SE

The iPhone SE was available in black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED at a base price of US$399. All color variants have a black front and feature a similar external design of the iPhone 8 featuring a 4.7-inch Retina HD display but powered by the Apple A13 Bionic processor used in the iPhone 11 series. The 12-megapixel camera supported portrait mode and was advertised as the "best single-camera system in an iPhone".[2]

IPhone 9

Before Apple's announcement, the tech media inaccurately speculated that this model would be named the iPhone 9.

This model replaced the 1st generation iPhone SE, which had been introduced in 2016. After first version's discontinuation in 2018, a so-called iPhone 9 had been expected as a replacement, especially after the its specs were leaked from developer builds of iOS 14.[3] This model would later become known as the 2nd-generation iPhone SE.

On the early morning of April 17, 2020, Apple's retail store closure page due to the COVID-19 pandemic was briefly redirected to the pre-order page of the new iPhone SE.[4] However, this was quickly reverted after the pre-orders became active after 5AM PDT.[5]

  • The white 2nd generation iPhone SE is the first iPhone with a home button to have a white back and black front since the white iPhone 5c.
  • The Apple logo on the back is centered like in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, with the elimination of the 'iPhone' text.
