The 2nd-generation iPod touch was announced by Apple at its "Let's Rock" event on September 9, 2008. It became available to the public on the same day when it was lanched.
New features[]
The second iPod touch was an improved model compared to its predecessor. Its Wi-Fi antenna on the back top left was oval shaped, the rim color was changed from gray to silver, volume controls were added to the left side, and speakers were integrated into the device. A teardown conducted after its release confirmed the existence of a Bluetooth chip. However, Bluetooth functionality was not enabled until after the iPhone OS 3.0 update.[1] It's battery lifespan was also improved with a 789 mAh battery. The iPod touch has 8, 16, 32GB models with 128MB of DRAM.
Support[]
Instead of only being able to be updated to iPhone OS 3.1.3, the 2nd-generation iPod touch could be updated to iOS 4.2.1 like the iPhone 3G, although as with the iPhone 3G, some features of iOS 4 such as multitasking and home screen wallpapers, were not supported. It was succeeded by the 3rd generation iPod touch in 2009, although the 8 GB model of the 2nd-generation iPod touch remained on sale, with slightly updated internals such as a new boot ROM, alongside the 3rd generation until the introduction of the 4th-generation iPod touch in September 2010.[2][3][4]
