Why Apple fails in India (and why it matters)

Apple has faced challenges in entering the market due to the comparatively high prices of its product lines.[2] In 2017, Wistron began local manufacturing trials of Apple's entry-level iPhone SE in an effort to reduce its cost to Indian consumers.[3] In 2018, India accounted for US$2 billion in sales, less than 0.7% of Apple's total revenue, mainly through third-party resellers and distribution channels. Apple made substantial investments in moving iPhone production into the country.[2] By the end of 2019, Apple still only held about 2% market share of India's overall smartphone market, but increased its share in the the premium segment to over 75%, in part due to price cuts to the iPhone XR made possible through local manufacturing.[4] Companies involved in Apple's supply chain, including Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron, committed to invest about an additional 65 billion rupees (US$880 million) to increase the number of smartphones produced in India.[5]

In December 2020, disgruntled workers caused $7 million dollars in damage at a plant that was operated by Wistron to manufacture iPhones for Apple.[6] After it was determinated that the riot was caused by reduced or unpaid salaries, Apple stated that Wistron would receive no new business from them until "complete corrective actions" were taken.[7] In 2022, Foxconn began assembling the iPhone 14 for Apple at a factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.[8] In January 2023, Jabil began shipping AirPods enclosures made in India to other manufacturing facilities for Apple's supply chain in China and Vietnam.[9]

On September 23, 2020, the Apple online store opened operations in India for the first time.[10] Apple partnered with Blue Dart Express to handle delivery of shipments within the country.[2]

Apple had been planning to build its first Indian flagship retail store in Mumbai, though it had been delayed since 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[11] In December 2022, Apple began hiring to fill retail management and specialist positions in India, renewing speculation that a store would be opened soon.[12] The first, Apple BKC, was opened in a 22,000-square-foot space at the Jio World Drive mall in Mumbai in April 18, 2023. Apple Saket opened two days later in a 10,000-square-foot store at the Select Citywalk shopping centre in the Saket District Centre of New Delhi.[13][14][15] Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared in person to inaugurate both stores in his first trip to India in 7 years.[16]
