Instagram is a widely-used social media app that is available for iOS. It can also be accessed through a web browser by desktop or laptop computers. Account registration is required for access. In contrast to pre-existing social media apps, Instagram is focused on the sharing of photos and videos.

History[]

Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom, a graduate of Stanford University who had interned at Odeo, the predecessor to Twitter, and worked at Google. While working in 2009 at Nextstop, a travel recommendations startup, he learned to code and developed a prototype of a web app called Burbn, to share photos of his experiences with fine whiskeys and bourbons. In March 2010, he met with venture capitalists from Andreessen Horowitz and Baseline Ventures, soon receiving $500,000 in seed funding.[1][2]

Systrom hired fellow Stanford graduate Mike Krieger, and Burbn evolved into Instagram, which was launched as an iOS app on October 6, 2010. It was downloaded by 25,000 users on its first days, and reached a million users by the middle of December. Its success was driven by the improved camera systems of the new iPhone 4. In 2011, Systrom declined an offer from Twitter to acquire the company for $500 million in stock. In March 2012, Instagram had reached 27 million users. In April 2012, Instagram released its first Android app and also received an offer from Facebook for $1 billion in cash and stock. Instagram was acquired by Facebook immediately before the latter's initial public offering (IPO). Additional access to Instagram includes a web portal in November 2012, Amazon Fire support in June 2014, and Microsoft Windows devices in 2016. Instagram reached a billion users in 2018[1][3]

Support for iPadOS[]

As of 2022, there is not yet a dedicated iPad app of Instagram, though iPadOS 15 and later can properly adapt the iOS version for iPhones into landscape mode.[4] Current Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that iPad support is not a high priority due to the smaller user base.[5]
