History with Apple[]

Biden is the first U.S. president known to wear an Apple Watch while in the Oval Office.[1][2] In July 2021, he signed an executive order directing the Federal Trade Commission to introduce rules in support of the right to repair manufactured goods, such as Apple products.[3] In January 2022, Biden acknowleged the efforts of Apple and other companies in changing their policies to address this issue.[4]

On August 25, 2021, Biden met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss how to improve cybersecurity.[5] In November 2021, Apple joined the "First Movers Coalition", introduced by Biden to have private sector corporations pledge their resources towards clean energy.[6]

On July 1, 2022, Biden announced that late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.[7][8] On August 9, 2022, Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act which provides billions of dollars to boost research and bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States. Apple had lobbied for the legislation due to the global chip shortage which affected its manufacturing supply chain.[9]

In January 2023, Biden wrote a commentary article in the Wall Street Journal calling on Congress to pass privacy legislation to 'hold Big Tech accountable'. While he did not mention any company by name, it was reported that Apple was clearly among major targets of Biden's piece.[10]

In March 2024, the Biden administration sued Apple over alleged monopolistic practices.[11]
