Keyboard dictation is a feature available to Apple devices and Macs with access to a microphone. It can be enabled in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences on a Mac to allow voice recognition so that text can be dictated in place of being typed on a keyboard. On iOS and iPadOS devices, this feature can be enabled by pressing the microphone button that appears with the keyboard that pops up on the screen. On Apple TV consoles that support Siri, this feature can be enabled in the General settings.

Requirements[]

Normally, an internet connection is required so that Apple servers can process the voice recognition in a similar fashion as Siri requests. The iPhone 6S and other mobile devices released by Apple in 2015 and later can process dictation internally without an internet connection. Starting with macOS 12 (Monterey) which was released in late 2021, Macs with Apple Silicon can process the voice recognition internally without the need for an internet connection.[1]
