The LaserWriter IIg was a high-end monochrome laser printer from the LaserWriter series that was released by Apple Computer in October 1991.

The IIg could print at a resolution of 300-dpi from a Canon LBP-SX print engine that could output 8 pages-per-minute with a rated life of 300,000 pages. It is compatible with Apple M6002 or HP LaserJet 92295A toner cartridges.[1] It utilized FinePrint and PhotoGrade to adjust individual dot sizes to simulate smoother edges and grays produced by higher resolution printers.[2]

The 25 MHz Motorola 68030 processor could rasterize images from PostScript Level 2 or PCL 4+ printer data. The data could be transmitted through a LocalTalk network to its RS-422 serial port, or a direct serial PC connection to its RS-232 port. It also supports faster EtherTalk networking over its proprietary AAUI Ethernet port. A SCSI port could be used to attach an external drive to store additional fonts. It omitted the unused ADB port from previous LaserWriter II models.[2][3]

The IIg was discontinued in October 1993 and superseded by the LaserWriter Pro 630. Other LaserWriter II models could be converted to a IIg though a printer controller board upgrade from Apple.[5]

Legacy support[]

Apple phased out support for printing over the old AppleTalk-based EtherTalk protocol in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The IIg also does not support printing over TCP/IP like the LaserWriter Pro 630.[6][7]
