Apple is developing various augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) projects, some of which have yet to be publicly announced. Hardware development since January 2021 has reportedly been led by former Senior VP Dan Riccio, who is reporting directly to Tim Cook.[1][2]
Hardware technologies
- N301: Apple is reportedly working on an "Apple VR" headset which would allow the user to be virtually connected from any location, in a more immersive experience than an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can presently offer through FaceTime.[3][4][5]
- N421: A set of lightweight AR glasses which would co-exist more seamlessly with the user's surroundings. This approach was reportedly preferred by former design chief Jonathan Ive during early development.[6] This project has been referred to as "Apple Glasses" by the tech media.[7]
- T288: A combination of AR and VR projects, possibly encompassing the above.[8]
Software technologies
- ARKit, scene data gathering and processing introduced in iOS 11.[9]
- RealityKit, scene rendering and simulation introduced in iOS 13.
- Reality Composer, an app for building and testing AR experiences for iPhone and iPad.
- Reality Converter, a utility for converting between 3D formats for use in RealityKit.
- realityOS, an operating system for the above hardware and software.[11]
