Lossless is a term describing a data compression algorithm which mathematically retains all the information in the data, allowing it to be recovered perfectly by decompression.[1]
Unix compress, GNU gzip, and Zip perform lossless compression.[1] An algorithm which loses any information is described as being lossy.[2]
