Low Power Mode is a feature in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS that allows mobile Apple devices to extend battery life by reducing background activities.[1][2] It can be accessed at Settings > Battery
. A button can also be added to the Control Center at Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls

Affected activities[]
- CPU may be throttled by as much as 40%.
- Display brightness is reduced.
- Display refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz on devices that support ProMotion.
- Some visual effects are reduced.
- 5G connections are switched to 4G (except for large downloads and streaming).
- Background app refresh is disabled.
- Background email fetch is disabled.
- Automatic downloads are disabled.
- iCloud Photos are temporarily paused.
- Auto-Lock defaults to 30 seconds.
Low Power Mode is automatically turned off when a charging an iPhone or iPad reaches 80% battery life, though it can be manually enabled again. A user is normally prompted to turn on this feature when the battery level of their iOS device has been drained down to 20%, and once again at 10%.[4] iPadOS users only receive a single warning at 10%.[5]
History[]
Low Power Mode was introduced for supported iPhones with iOS 9 in September 2015, for iPads with iPadOS 15 in September 2021, for Macs with macOS 12 (Monterey) in October 2021, and for Apple Watches with watchOS 9 in September 2022.[2][6][7] In September 2022, the modal low power warning was also changed to a less intrusive notification within the Dynamic Island on the new iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.[8]
