Mac OS 8.7 (alpha version a6c2, code named "Sarah") was a pre-release version of the successor to Mac OS 8.6 that was renamed to Mac OS 9 (code named "Sonata").

Mac OS 8.7 is based on the faster PowerPC-native nanokernel introduced in 8.6 and featured several new control panels, such as Keychain Access (revived from PowerTalk), Multiple Users, and Software Update.
History[]
Early development builds of Mac OS 8.7 began to surface in February 1999.[1] By June, the 5th seeded build, Beta 2, was code named "Spunky" and featured a revised version of Sherlock with a brushed metal interface similar to QuickTime 4.[2]
