The Macintosh Performa display at the Apple Company Store in 1997.
The Macintosh Performa was a consumer-oriented line of Macintosh computers from Apple Computer. They were first sold through consumer stores and also became available from the same computer stores that sold other Macintosh models.
Product history[]
The Performas were launched with their own variants of System 7, from 7.0.1P to 7.1.2P, which came with special software bundles and utilities, such as the Performa control panel. With the release of System 7.5, newer Performas came with the matching versions of the classic Mac OS. The removal of bundles as a Performa exclusivity, and the eventual removal of even the monitor as a core part of the Performa, made it lose its defining characteristics.
Discontinuation[]
By the fourth quarter of 1996, Performa sales were 90,000 units below sales targets, contributing to a loss of US$120 million.[1] When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he found the product lineup to be confusing and the last Performas were discontinued in 1997, leaving only the Power Macintosh line. The iMac G3 was launched in 1998 as the new desktop consumer system of Apple's simplified product lineup.[2]
