The Macintosh Performa 5400 was a series of all-in-one personal computers that were rebranded by Apple Computer for the consumer market. Based on the Power Macintosh 5400, these were sold as part of Apple's Performa line from April 22, 1996 to December 1, 1997. The Power Macintosh 5400 and Performa 5400 variants were all succeeded by the Power Macintosh 5500.

Features[]

The Performa 5400 models were all-in-one desktop Macintosh models with a built-in 15" shadow mask display. It contained 1 MB of VRAM that could support up to 8-bit color at a resolution of 832 x 624 pixels and 16-bit color at 640 x 480 pixels. Its logic board, code named "Alchemy", supported faster PowerPC 603e processors. Two 168-pin DIMM slots allowed RAM to be upgraded from the base 8 MB soldered onto the motherboard, to a maximum of 136 MB. There were three different expansion slots: a PCI slot, a Comm Slot II for an internal modem or Ethernet card, and a video-in slot that could accept connection to an Apple TV Tuner Card. The CD-ROM and external hard drives were connected through a SCSI bus. The internal hard drive was connected through an IDE bus. The built-in floppy drive supported 1.44 MB high-density disks.[1]

The Performa 5400 came with Mac OS 7.5.3 pre-installed along with System Enabler 410 and a home software bundle. The last operating system that it supported was Mac OS 9.1. It also features an L2 cache slot that can be used as a processor direct slot to upgrade it to a PowerPC G3 processor.

Variants[]

Variants of the Performa 5400 were based on the same logic board design, but sold in different configurations to different regional markets.

The Performa 5400 models are all-in-one desktop counterparts to Apple's Macintosh Performa 6400 line, which are based on the same "Alchemy" logic board, but in a tower configuration.
