The Macintosh Performa 580CD is a version of the LC 580 that was rebranded by Apple Computer for the consumer market in Australia, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand. It was sold as part of Apple's Performa line from May 1, 1995 to February 1, 1996.
Features[]
The Performa 580 was an all-in-one desktop Macintosh that externally resembled the 575 and used the same 66/33 MHz 68LC040 processor, but replaced the built-in Trinition display for a 14" shadow mask version. The 580's logic board was comparable to a Macintosh LC 630, instead of the LC 475-based design that was used in the 575. The 580 contained 1 MB of VRAM that could support up to 16-bit color at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. Two 72-pin SIMM slots allowed RAM to be upgraded from the base 4 MB soldered onto the motherboard, to a maximum of 52 MB. There were three different expansion slots: a 32-bit LC PDS slot, a Comm Slot for an internal modem or Ethernet card, and a video-in slot that could accept connection to an Apple TV Tuner Card. The CD-ROM and external hard drives were connected through a SCSI bus. The internal hard drive was connected through a new (for Apple) IDE bus. The built-in floppy drive supported 1.44 MB high-density disks.[1]
The Performa 580 came with System 7.5 pre-installed, and supported up to Mac OS 8.1.[1]
Variants[]
The Macintosh Performa 588CD shipped on April 13, 1995 with nearly identical specifications, but with KanjiTalk 7.5 for the Japanese consumer market. The Macintosh LC 580 was available worldwide for the educational market. These models could also be upgraded with a Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card.
