The Macintosh Quadra 630 was the last model of Apple Computer's Quadra series of Macintosh systems. It was released on July 18, 1994, replacing the Quadra 610, although the PowerPC-based Power Macintosh line had already been introduced a few months earlier in March. Two reasons were cited for this: One, the older 68040 processors were less expensive; and two, PowerPC-native software was not yet as widely available.[1]

Product history[]

The Quadra 630 was powered by a full 33 MHz 68040 processor with a floating-point unit (FPU). Lower-priced versions with a 68LC040 (without an FPU) were marketed as the Macintosh LC 630 for the educational market, and the Performa 630 for the consumer market.

The Quadra 630 was discontinued on April 17, 1995. The 630 models were superseded by the Power Macintosh 6200 and the Performa 6200, which took similar positions in Apple's product lineup, using the same case design. A PowerPC 601 upgrade was also offered from Apple until March 2, 1996.
