The MagSafe Charger is a wireless charging device released by Apple in October 2020 with the iPhone 12 series.
Description
The charger resurrects Apple's MagSafe brand and is based on the Qi wireless charging standard. It was announced in an Apple special event on October 13, 2020 in place of the previously-announced AirPower charging mat project, which was cancelled in March 2019.[1][2] Apple also announced the MagSafe Duo Charger, a foldable version that can simultaneously charge a supported iPhone and Apple Watch, though it has not yet been released.[3]
The MagSafe Charger includes a proprietary magnetic coil that aligns and attaches the charger to devices that contain matching coils.[4] This allows for charging of up to 15 watts on iPhone 12 models when used with a supported USB-C power source. It is also compatible older iPhone and some Android models that support wireless charging, but only at a maximum rate of 5 watts.[5]
