In 1977, Johnson had just graduated from high school and met a receptionist from Apple Computer at the Good Earth restaurant in Cupertino. The receptionist, presumably Apple's first secretary Sherry Livingston, worked in Apple's first office building next door at 20863 Stevens Creek Blvd. Johnson was hired the next day as employee #13 in the new production department.[2] However, John Draper has also claimed to have been the 13th employee.[3]

Johnson worked in the production department with Robert Martinengo, the 21st employee, and Chrisann Brennan, Steve Jobs' girlfriend at the time. Johnson spent 2 years manually assembling Apple II computers, as many as 57 in one week. Prior to leaving the company, he observed engineers working on the Lisa project.[1][2]
