Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac was a version of the Microsoft Office suite that was developed by Microsoft and released for Mac OS X in January 2008. Though based on Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows, some features are notably different or missing. Office 2008 is a universal binary that supports PowerPC and 32-bit Intel processors.[1]

Description[]

Development and release[]

Office 2008 was originally scheduled to be released in Fall 2007, but was delayed due to quality control issues and challenges stemming from Apple's transition to Intel processors.[2][3] It was released on January 15, 2008 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco.[4][5] However, support for Visual Basic macros was not ported until Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, released in 2010.[6]

Editions[]

Office 2008 for Mac was available in three editions, all of which included Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008, and Entourage 2008.

  • Home and Student Edition, available through retail for $149.95 with support for up to 3 user installations.
  • Standard Edition, available through retail for $399.95. Includes Microsoft Server Exchange support and Automator Actions for Workflows in Microsoft Office.
  • Special Media Edition, available through retail for $499.95. Includes Standard Edition contents plus Microsoft Expression Media asset management software.[7]
  • Business Edition, replaced the Standard and Special Media Editions in September 2009 for $399.95, or for $239.95 as an upgrade. Newly added or updated software included Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition and Document Connection for Mac.[8][9]
