Polishing Cloth is a polishing cloth developed by Apple Inc. Since it is non-abrasive, it may not be ideal for actual mechanical or chemical polishing.

Release history[]

The Polishing Cloth was first released on December 10, 2019 as an accessory included with the Pro Display XDR.[1] It was released as a separate product for US$19 on October 18, 2021,[2] though it was not promoted during Apple's special event on that day.[3] No discounts are available for educational customers.[4]

Specifications[]

According to Apple, the Polishing Cloth is a polishing cloth made with soft, non-abrasive material to clean any supported Apple display, including nano-textured glass, safely and effectively. However, as of October 2021, the only officially supported display from Apple was the Pro Display XDR.[2] A Polishing Cloth from Apple can be identified by an Apple logo on the front bottom-right corner and is only available in white. Space Gray and Rose Gold options are not available.[5]

Unsupported devices[]

Most Apple devices produced before mid-2014 are not included in the official compatibility list, such as:[2]

How to and how not to use a Polishing Cloth.

For occasional removal of difficult smudges, a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution is recommended. To clean the Polishing Cloth, the following procedure is recommended: (no Terminal commands are necessary)[6]

  • Hand wash the Polishing Cloth with dish soap and water.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Allow the Polishing Cloth to air dry for at least 24 hours.

Reception[]

Jack Morse of Mashable called the Polishing Cloth "Incredible", adding that "Apple never ceases to wow."[7] Victoria Song of Gizmodo wrote, "...How Much for a Polishing Cloth?!"[8] A combination of unforeseen demand and supply chain issues led to the Polishing Cloth being sold out by the next day, with wait times of over a month. By October 20th, two days later, it was sold out through the end of the year. Users of Apple devices may have to leave them unpolished as the unsupported use of inferior cleaning products may affect AppleCare coverage.[1][9][10] The Polishing Cloth was back in stock on January 11, 2022.[11]
