The PowerBook Duo 280c was a color subnotebook from the PowerBook Duo line that was introduced by Apple Computer on May 16, 1994.
Features[]
The Duo 280c featured a 66/33 MHz Motorola 68LC040 processor with an 8.4" active matrix color display that supported 640x480 in 8-bit color, and 640x400 letterboxed in 16-bit color. The logic board contained 4 MB of RAM which could be upgraded to 40 MB. It also included an improved Type 3 battery.
The Duo 280c was compatible with the Duo Dock II and Plus models. Owners of the original Duo Dock required a top cover upgrade to accommodate the slightly greater thickness of the color display.[2]
The Duo 280c shipped with System 7.1.1 (with PowerBook Duo Enabler v2.0) and could be upgraded to Mac OS 8.1.
Upgrade kits[]
Apple offered a PowerBook Duo 280 upgrade kit for owners of the Duo 250 and 270c. It included a replacement logic board with a 66/33 MHz Motorola 68LC040 processor, a new case bottom, stiffener assembly, Duo NiMH Type 3 battery, 36-watt power adapter, miscellaneous parts, and a stick-on label to indicate an upgraded unit.[3]
Pre-existing owners of the Duo 280c or earlier models could upgrade to a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e processor with the PowerBook Duo 2300 upgrade kit.[4]
