The Power Macintosh 8600 was a personal computer that was a part of Apple Computer's Power Macintosh series of Macintosh computers.

Features[]

The PowerPC 604e processor was mounted on a daughtercard that fit into a slot on the logic board, making user upgrades possible. The Power Macintosh 8600 featured 3 PCI slots, 168-pin DIMM slots for RAM, and used 50 pin SCSI hard drives.[1]

Releases[]

The 8600 was introduced on February 17, 1997 at a processor speed of 200 MHz. It was updated on August 5, 1997 to processor speeds of 250 and 300 MHz, which replaced the original 200 MHz version. This product was discontinued one year after it was introduced, after having been superseded by the Power Macintosh G3.

Variants[]

The 8600 is externally very similar to the Power Macintosh 9600, sharing the same size case, but the former only contained three usable PCI slots, unlike the six in the 9600. The tower version of the Power Macintosh G3 used a smaller version of the 8600/9600 case which was downsized to fit the logic board with 3 PCI slots.
