The Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One ("AIO") was an desktop computer released by Apple for the educational market on April 3, 1998. The "beige" all-in-one design was nicknamed the "molar" and shared similar internal technology as the iMac G3, which was released a few months later on August 15, 1998, but was overlooked because of the popular reception to the colorful design of the latter. The Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One was discontinued on January 1, 1999, only about 9 months after its initial release.[1]
Description[]
The G3 All-In-One was designed for the educational market, featuring two 3.5 mm headphone ports on the front of the machine, so two students could listen to the same audio at the same time. It contained a 233 or 266 MHz PowerPC G3 processor on a 64-bit, 66 MHz data bus.[2]
Graphics[]
The original model of the Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One shipped with an ATI 3D Rage II+, before the graphics card was upgraded to an ATI Rage Pro on May 1, 1998. The computer featured a 15-inch shadow mask CRT display, with a 13.8-inch visible area. The CRT supported a resolution of up to 1024x768, which was common for computers of the time.[3]
Upgrades[]
The G3 All-In-One was very upgradeable, with three 33 MHz PCI expansion slots, and one Personality Card slot which on most models was occupied by a "Whisper' AV Capture card. It was found to support up to 768 MB of PC66 SDRAM, although Apple stated it could only support 384 MB officially.[3] The original G3 processor normally limits support to Mac OS X 10.2.8, but the Encore/ZIFG4 card from Sonnet Technologies can upgrade it to a PowerPC G4, providing support for up to Mac OS X 10.4.11.[4]
