- Not to be confused with Jigsaw Puzzle for classic Mac OS or Jigsaw Puzzle for iOS.
Puzzle is a desk accessory written by Andy Hertzfeld for the original release of the Macintosh in January 1984. It was included with System 1 through 7.1.2.
History[]
During a preliminary review in September 1983, software manager Jerome Coonen considered dropping Puzzle from the original release of the Macintosh 128K due to the desk accessory's 6 KB size, considered relatively large at the time. Hertzfeld then recoded it in assembly language instead of Pascal, reducing its size to less than 1 KB, allowing it to stay as part of the original Macintosh system software release.
Updates[]
The desk accessory was updated very little until System 7, when it delivered a deadpan recording of "Ta-da!" instead of a simple beep when the puzzle was solved.[1]
Replacements[]
Puzzle was replaced by the more graphical Jigsaw Puzzle in System 7.5, which was released on September 12, 1994.[2] However, the older Puzzle was still functional through Mac OS 9.2.2 and could be run in the Classic environment of Mac OS X up to version 10.4.11. A similar puzzle widget named Tile Game was released as part of the Dashboard feature of Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" in April 2005.[3]
