The Radeon Pro 580X is a GPU that was developed by AMD as the default MPX module included with the 3rd-generation Mac Pro. Unlike other MPX GPUs, only one can be installed at a time and it did not support Infinity Fabric Link.[1]
Description[]
The Radeon Pro 580X MPX Module was based on AMD's Ellesmere professional mobile graphics chip that was built on the 14 nm process. The GPU clock speed was 1.1 GHz, which could be boosted to 1.2 GHz. producing up to 5.6 teraflops. It contained 8 GB of video RAM running at 1.71 GHz.[2] The module features two HDMI ports and communicates with the Mac Pro's built-in Thunderbolt 3 ports through the proprietary MPX connector. It could support two 5K or 6K displays, or four 4K displays. The MPX module took up the space of a double-wide PCIe card, but did not require an auxiliary power cable as it could draw all necessary power from the MPX connector.
Resale value[]
Although the Radeon Pro 580X MPX Module is not available for individual sale, the Apple online store options for the 3rd-generation Mac Pro imply a retail value of US$ 400 to 600.[3] However, owners who have upgraded their GPU found the 580X challenging to resell on the aftermarket as of 2020 because it is a base model MPX module, and is only supported by the 3rd-generation Mac Pro.[4]
